Vale Cecil Wheeler

Cecil (Cec) arrived in Western Australia in 1960 having represented both New South Wales and Australia (1955 in the Swaythling Cup in Utrecht with Phil Anderson, Lou Laza, Barney Peters and Arden Robinson). Cec was born in Dubbo and won many NSW country tournaments and the ACT Open in 1958.

On his arrival in Western Australia, Cec had quite a rivalry with Phil Anderson, with those players alternating wins in several State Open and country tournaments. Cec won the state singles title in 1960, 1962 and 1964 and won a total of 10 doubles titles (men’s and mixed) btween 1960 and 1971. He was a playing member of eight state teams and also served in a non-playing capacity on a number of occasions.

On the veteran’s side, Cec won four state veterans titles and represented WA in 1988 & 1989, having been brought out of retirement.

Cec was state coach on a number of occasions and was always willing to help with electrical work needed at championships and in setting up the Hay Street and Gerard Street Centres.

Although Cec was no stranger to controversies, he was always ready to promote the sport and encourage other players. My personal experience was as a rather shy 16 year old, when he coached and encouraged me in my early years in the sport. His daughter Joanne represented Western Australia in the juniors.

A Memorial Service is to be held for the late Cec Wheeler at 5.00 pm on Thursday 10 February at Ugly Ducking Wines, 7790 West Swan Road, West Swan. This will be followed by some nibbles and drinks. Casual attire is acceptable but dress as you feel appropriate.
